Poppy Festival

I went to the poppy festival in Lancaster. As I walked through the entrance I couldn't help but notice an incredible sand sculpture. I thought it was amazing and almost looked like a real lion. It made me think of the wilderness and created a artistic atmosphere. The artist that designed this custom made sand sculpture in the shape of a lion must have put a lot of thought into the design of it.  I thought the art of sand sculpture was a unique promotion of "artists in action" and it was very interesting and beautiful. I also saw some intriguing entertainers such as ethnic dancers and musicians. Their outfits and movements were mimicking different cultures. I enjoyed listening to the different sounds although none of the music really touched me. I saw some belly dancers which made me think of last summer while I was on a cruise to Greece the crew members offered a belly dancing class. It brought back good memories.

FASHION

I have noticed that that fashion is in fact mimetic in every way. It also repeats itself. Trends from the 70’s and 80’s are coming back in style and mimicking the past. Society is influenced by fads around them and trends spread through this. I feel that celebrities are the ones that start trends, and next thing you know people actually believe that they should also do this. It’s like a sales technique. I know I do this all the time. I see some of my friends wearing a stylish outfit and it makes me want to go shopping. But when I do go shopping I try to find a different version of that outfit that fits “me” and my personal style. I saw some of my friends with feathers extensions in their hair, so I decided to also get it. Next thing you know I see feathers in every other person’s hair. I think celebrities started it, and hairstylists promote it. I know this is a reoccurring trend from the 80’s. I just thought it was interesting to notice how certain trends are mimetic.

I N T R O

Hi Everyone, my name is Tali and I am a junior transfer student from Moorpark College. I am a Philosophy major with a minor in Political Science and plan on going to law school after I graduate next June.

I believe each and every one of us has an artist inside of us. Reading the book "The Artists Way" made me realize how artistic I really am and I am still exploring my passion. I am interested and would like to discuss movies and stand up comedy, as well as music, fashion, and culinary arts. But my new obsession is photography. I am trying to figure out how photography relates to mimesis and how what I photograph is imitating something else. I would like to believe my work is original, but I guess nothing in our world is because every idea in our heads was planted there by something else. Anyways, I just bought a professional camera two weeks ago and have been trying to figure out how to use it to capture precious moments in time. I feel as though photos are the best way to remember the past. This last week I went to Disneyland with my fiance because his little nieces were in town visiting from Washington State. I decided to bring my camera along and take some photos of Sydney, who is going to be the flower girl at our wedding. As I was photographing her running around blowing bubbles with the bubble blower machine, I envisioned myself as a child. She reminds me so much of how I used to be. I was focusing on her natural beauty and her vivid personality and trying to make it come alive in my photos. I am not sure if this is the right way to perceive mimesis of photography but I can't think of any other way to incorporate the two. Please let me know if you have any thoughts :)

Thanks for reading! Have a great weekend!
